Kami (Magic the Gathering)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Kami are fictional spirit beings that embody an aspect of reality in the fictional plane of Kamigawa, from Magic: The Gathering. Each Kami takes the shape and has powers associated with the element of reality it embodies. In the story, before the Kami war, the Kami were revered as gods and lived in harmony, as a benevolent force to humanity. When the barrier (called the Veil) that separated the spirit world from the mortal realm was ruptured, the Kami spilled out. There was a devastating war between mortal and spirit, in which many new breeds of Kami were spawned.
During the war, which was set off by a disrespectful human lord, the Kami repealed the laws of nature to impede humans, such as creating massive, unseasonable blizzards, corrupting the ground beneath their feet and making the very spirits of their weapons rebel against them.
Everything that exists in the mortal realm has a Kami counterpart, even the very souls of the humans, which eventually began to rebel against their mortal owners. Each Kami takes the form of its mortal counterpart, some so irrational that human minds can't even begin to comprehend their shapes.
The Kami are not the only spirits of Kamigawa, and have demonic negatives, called the Oni, malevolent spirit-demons that were both revered and set free by the ogres of Kamigawa, through a ceremony called "Blood Rites."
