Kamat

Kamat is a common surname amongst Hindus of the konkan on the westcoast of India in the states of Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra. They could be Konkani or Marathi speaking people. The word Kamat it is believed to be derived from the name of the occupation. Kaamthi means landholder, cultivator or agriculturalist. "Kaamthi" is a contraction of "Kama" (work) + "Maththi" (soil). However, in modern times, the surname is no more linked to the profession.
Kamat usually denotes a konkani from North Kanara.Kamath a konkani from South canara .Kamat may also be written as Camotim in the erstwhile Portuguese held territories of Salcette and Bardez in Goa though they are today mostly written as Kamat.
