[edit] About the album
Kaleidoscope was not a success in the United States but launched Kelis' career in Europe. "Caught out There", was a modest urban radio success and a MTV/BET video hit in the U.S. However, the album made Kelis a rising star in Europe. According to the BPI British music organization Kaleidoscope went gold selling over 100,000 copies in England alone. A reason for the limited success was the reluctance to accept Kelis, since her first single "Caught out There" contained a seemingly furious Kelis and the album featured tracks like "Mafia" about the gangsta culture and "Ghetto Children" about domestic abuse. Kelis also refused to be pigeon-holed at first and wasn't too happy about being labeled hip-hop or R&B and preferred to be in the generic pop/rock section where the vast majority of CDs are put. In the U.S. the album debuted at number 144 on the Billboard 200 and number 23 in U.S. R&B selling 12,423 copies in the opening week. But despite the low first week sales it managed to push over 200,000 copies which is quite remarkable. The album has sold just over 249,000 copies to date in the U.S according to Nielsen Soundscan.
However, the entire album really took off in Europe, where all three singles, "Caught out There", "Good Stuff", and "Get Along with You" were sizable hits and Kelis' colorful style in both clothing and hair in the videoclips with bright constrasting colors combining an urban style while maintaining girl power received considerable attention. "Caught out There" managed to get Kelis a #52 chart entry in the UK on imports and it was therefore decided to release a single which peaked at #4. "Good Stuff" was also a modest hit securing a number #19 position in the UK charts. The third and final single from the album, "Get Along with You" was her first and only solo hit to miss the top 40, peaking at a disappointing #51. The album went on, however, to be certified gold.
The European success resulted in Kelis softening up her initial tough image and move to Europe because she preferred the reception of the European audiences and press and released her next album Wanderland outside the United States. It wasn't until her third album Tasty that Kelis was getting the critical acclaim in her own country.
