IMDb profile

Kal Ho Naa Ho (Hindi कल हो ना हो, Urdu: کل ہو نہ ہو, English: Tommorow Might Not Come) is a 2003 Bollywood film set in New York City. It stars Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, and Saif Ali Khan. The film was directed by first-timer Nikhil Advani; it was produced and co-written by Karan Johar, better known as the director of the hit films Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001).

This movie resembles Dil Chahta Hai (2001) in blending Bollywood and Hollywood conventions with high production values. While copyright violation has long run rampant in the Bollywood film industry, Kal Ho Naa Ho is notable for having licensed the rights to Roy Orbison's "Oh, Pretty Woman" for an extended musical sequence taking place in the streets in New York.

Because of its familiar setting and music, accessibility to non-Indians, good production values, and respect for copyright, Kal Ho Naa Ho has been used to introduce Bollywood to markets where Indian films have been rare.

The movie stars Shah Rukh Khan as Aman Mathur, an Indian living in New York who gets involved in the unhappy family life of an Indian-American family. Eventually he finds himself in a romantic triangle with Naina (Preity Zinta) and Rohit (Saif Ali Khan).

The family in question, the Kapurs, have many problems. Jennifer Kapur's (Jaya Bachchan) husband committed suicide; her mother-in-law Lajjo Kapur blames her for the death. Lajjo is also determined to marry off Jennifer's daughter Naina -- over her mother's objections, if necessary. Furthermore, Jennifer is unhappy because Lajjo refuses to accept Gia, a 6-year old girl whom Jennifer adopted. The family-run restaurant is not running well. Everyone is quarrelling and there is no peace in the house.

Aman does his best to cheer them up, helps Jennifer with her restaurant, and tries to save Naina from the arranged marriage by promoting a match between Naina and her best friend Rohit.

Naina however, does not want to marry Rohit; she is in love with Aman. Aman, sensing her affection, makes a point of telling her that he's already married. Naina turns to Rohit for comfort and ends by accepting his proposal.

But Aman lied; not only is he not married, he is in love with Naina. Yet he cannot be with her, or with anyone; he has a weak heart, and will soon die -- hence the title of the film, which roughly means "There may be no tomorrow". Knowing that there is no way he will live a complete life, Aman has decided to take pleasure in making other people's lives happier. He ultimately succeeds and is remembered with love and respect after his death.

[edit] Trivia

  • This is the third movie in which Shahrukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukherjee all appear together - both ladies are seen for a few seconds dancing during the song "Maahi Ve". The other movies are Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Newly added to this list of appearing together, SRK, Kajol, and Rani were all in the song "Rock 'N' Roll Soniye" in Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna".
  • Shahrukh Khan sustained a major injury to his back early in the shooting but continued with the filming. [citation needed]
  • Shah Rukh Khan did not like "Oh, Pretty Woman", feeling it should have Hindi lyrics instead.[citation needed]
  • The rights to Roy Orbison's "Oh, Pretty Woman" were bought for use as the title of one of the songs and part of an otherwise original song.
  • One of the twins from Main Hoon Na can be seen as a background dancer in the song Maahi Ve.
  • You can spot producer Karan Johar and choreographer Farah Khan sitting on a table during the sequence where the restaurant is re-decorated.
  • The "Day Six Announcer" is played by the actor Uday Chopra.
  • Aman's doctor is played by actress Sonali Bendre.
  • It was the second Bollywood film to attain wide release in Germany in early 2005 (the first was Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham). The Hindi title was translated as Lebe und denke nicht an morgen ("Live, and don't think about tomorrow") but the film was generally publicized under the somewhat prosaic (English) title Indian Love Story. Since its release, Bollywood has become a popular genre in Germany, and other Indian films have also been shown on prime time television and have sold well on DVD. [1]
  • The film was released in France in 2005 as New-York Masala.
  • It was released in Poland in May 2006 as Gdyby jutra nie bylo (If Tomorrow Never Comes).
  • During the filming of the song Kuch To Hua Hai Priety Zinta fell on her back.
