[edit] Basic information

Kai is another member of Kaneda's gang.

[edit] Personality

Kai is another one of Kaneda's friends. He is a short guy and sometimes picked on (Yamagata, at one point, punches him in the back of the head), but he really kicks when the gang fights. Only Kaneda can ride better. In the story, he is mostly a side-character. He's separated from his friend for a large part of the movie, but not from Tetsuo. Kai encounters Tetsuo in a bar, but Tetsuo lets him live, presumably because he wants Kai to find and tell Kaneda about what he did to Yamagata. Inexplicably, he survives the explosion at the end of the movie and is re-united with Kaneda and Kei. It could be suggested that Kaisuke is an early anime example of the now popular bishonen characters. He is well-dressed and has stylised, though not dyed, hair. He is frequently over-emotional and sympathetic (for example, when Kaori comes to, she is wearing Kai's jacket). Also his general facial features are more common of female anime characters (pointed chin, eyelashes).

[edit] Role in the Plot

[edit] Kaisuke in the Manga

In the graphic novel, Kaisuke is a member of Kaneda's bike gang. After a gang war with the Tetsuo-led Clowns, he was sent to juvenile prison with the deposed Clown leader, Joker. As the two would recount later, Kaisuke rescued Joker after Akira's destruction of Neo-Tokyo, when a wall fell on top of Joker and crushed him. The two became friends and helped Kaneda fight Tetsuo and the Great Tokyo Empire. Some have suggested that Kaisuke is homosexual and has intimate (though unreciprocated) feelings for Kaneda, however, this is more of a western view of the way the two characters relate to each other.

[edit] Kaisuke in the Film

Kaisuke's role in the film is more minimized. He was a member of the bike gang and helped battle Tetsuo, but didn't ally himself with Joker.
