Kabartonjo

Kabartonjo is a small administrative highland town and division in the larger Baringo District of the Rift Valley Province, Kenya. The highlands surrounding Kabartonjo are called Kamasia, from the Kalenjin word kamâ:s 'cool highlands'. By analogy, Kabartonjo has been called 'Kameshen' in the past.
The division encompasses the Saimo, and Kapteberewo administrative localities. It derives its name from a clan called Bartonjo who were the original inhabitants of the western highlands of the Tugen Hills. The other eastern highlands, the highest of the Tugen Hills, popularly known as Saimo, are widely inhabited by the Bargullett-Turrel clan.
Kabartonjo rests at an altitude of approx. 2800 metres above sea level and has a most clement climate for the majority of the year. Much produce is cultivated in the area — the orange passion fruits are particularly good, and you can throw your finished halves at bewildered cattle on the trip to Baringo district's administrative centre Kabarnet, approx 21 km away.
