Juyan Lake Basin

The Juyan Lake Basin (Chinese: 居延海; Wade-Giles: Chüyen), is a rare wetland located in the desert of western Inner Mongolia at the Alxa League near the border of eastern Xinjiang and covers an area of about 10,000 km². The Juyan lake is the eastern part of three former terminal lakes located at the outer edges of the Hei River catchment which formed a large inland delta between the Qilian and the Gobi Altay, it has dried up due to improper development. The basin played an important role in ancient times and was historically part of the Gansu Corridor between the 2nd century BC to 8th century.
