Justin Volpe

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Justin Volpe was a New York City police officer who, on 9 August 1997, in the Brooklyn 70th Precinct bathroom, tortured Abner Louima with a broken handle of a broom or toilet plunger.[1]

Volpe repeatedly drove the handle into Louima's rectum and mouth, thus damaging Louima's intestines, urinary bladder, and teeth. Another officer held Louima as this was done. Other officers conspired to cover the crime up.

Volpe eventually pled guilty to second federal indictment. On 13 December 1999, he was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison, with no parole. Other officers were also implicated and convicted on charges stemming from the initial cover-up.

Volpe lived on Staten Island and his mother taught at a high school in Prince's Bay.

He is currently incarcerated in Federal Medical Center, Rochester, in southern Minnesota. His projected release date is August 3, 2025.

Volpe is the son of Robert Volpe, an NYPD detective who investigated art thefts in the 1970s and 80s.
