Justin Pogge (born April 22, 1986, in Fort McMurray, Alberta, now lives in Penticton, British Columbia) is professional ice hockey goaltender for the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL). He was raised alone by his mother Annet for his whole life. He was drafted in the third round, 90th overall in the 2004 Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, and signed to a three-year entry contract on December 19th, 2005. Pogge played for the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League in 2005-06, where he was named the top goaltender in both the WHL and the Canadian Hockey League.

The story of his birth was a mini-drama in its own. At the engagement party of his parents, Pogge's mother, Annet (aged 22), announced that she was pregnant. His father, upset at the news, almost immediately abandoned her. The heartbroken Annet was determined to take her own life. Just when she was about to commit the deed, her baby gave her a little kick. Annet, being a devout Christian, took it as a sign from God, and decided to live on. She raised Justin alone. Despite financial problems, she insisted on supporting Justin's passion: hockey. She invested her efforts wisely, because now she has a talented young gentleman as a son. When asked how he was going to spend his signing bonus with the Leafs, Pogge replied, "I've got to go buy my mom a car first; our van died".

In Summer 2006, Pogge was featured in an ad campaign for the Canadian clothing store Bootlegger, modelling the summer's fashions along with actress Sarah Mason.

[edit] 2006 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships

Pogge became a household name in December 2005 when he led Canada to a surprising gold medal defense of their 2005 championship. On January 5, 2006, Pogge led Team Canada to a 5-0 win over Team Russia to win the gold medal. After the game Justin received the team Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.

Pogge was not invited to the Canadian junior summer camp, and was not expected to make the team prior to the start of the WHL season, but earned a trip to Vancouver on the basis of his incredibly strong play with the Calgary Hitmen. He would end the tournament with three shutouts, and a goals against average below 1.00, becoming the hero of Canada's run.[1]
