The Jural Society of the State of Washington is a group advocating non-violent resistance to state and federal governments. Members believe that mankind has been granted unalienable rights, many of which are embodied in the U.S. Constitution. It is their view, however, that much of the current operations of government are illegitimate. The efforts at resistance range from serving notices to government offices, to refusal to pay income taxes. The tax protest has led to the confiscation of at least one Jural Society member's home. [1]

Despite the non-violent overtones, James Brailey, Jr., who was elected as the society's governor in 1998, was indicted on weapons charges in connection with a plot to kill Washington Governor Gary Locke. The FBI alleges that Brailey believed he was the true governor of Washington, and that his motivation to assassinate Locke was fueled by the fact that Locke is of Chinese descent. [2] Brailey was also a member of a Christian Identity group. [3]
