Junkers Ju 187
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Junkers Ju 187 was designed to replace the aging Ju 87 Stuka, which by the time of the Battle of Britain was fast approaching obsolescence. Although an extremely radical design, the Ju 187 project never made it to production. The plane would have featured many improvements over the old design, including a retractable undercarriage and an unusual 180° rotable tail. When rotated down it would give the tail gunner, armed with a new covered rear gun position, a full field of fire. It is not known how the airplane would have handled with the tail rotated (see picture lower right.) The Ju 187 would have been of all-metal construction with improved armor and armament.
