The Junior Eurovision Song Contest is very similar in structure to the Eurovision Song Contest. It is for children aged between 8 and 15 (from 2007 10 to 15). The song must be written by the artist and sung in the national language of the country. The children cannot have released a commercial song.

The contest was formed after a Scandinavian contest in 2002, Melodi Grand Prix Nordic, with Denmark, Norway and Sweden as participants. Danmarks Radio had already 2001 helt a junior contest only for Denmark. The EBU picked up the idea for a junior contest, and asked Denmark to host the first real JESC.

Denmark and Norway withdrawn for 2006 with the reason that the competition is too much pressure for the children. They returned to the old MGP Nordic, but Sweden will participate with the Swedish broadcaster TV4. Another Danish broadcaster wasn't interested, as well Norway withdrew with no independent broadcaster to take over. United Kingdom's ITV experienced extremely low viewers for the contests over the past years and were not interested with continuing with it. This makes it the United Kingdom's first absence from the Eurovision Song Contest in any shape or form since 1958.

10 countries have perfect attendances: Belarus, Belgium, Croatia, FYR Macedonia, Greece, Malta, Netherlands, Romania, Spain and Sweden.

The singing girl has been the basic logo since start, but in 2007 it will be changed.

[edit] Future

The partipicants number has decreased since its top 2004. In 2006, 15 countries compete-less than ever. In both 2005 and 2006, four countries have retreated. EBU has promised that the contest will go until at last 2007, but after that, the future is unsure. Even many Eurovision fans have criticised the show. However, there are some very possible future partipicants:

[edit] Likely future participants

All current participants of the Eurovision Song Contest are likely candidates to join the JESC at some point, but the following are ones which are more likely to participate in the near future:
