A Jumbee is a type of spirit in Guyanese folk tale.

There are numerous types of Jumbies and most are said to eat people when contact with them is made.

[edit] Backoo

Short creature with extremely long arms and legs. It is always male. Walks on all fours or on two feet. It has a destructive nature but brings prosperity to its master. Its food consists of milk and bananas. Possibly related to the Dover Demon.

Spirit of a woman who dies in childbirth, leaving her baby alive. Restless, owing to the separation from her baby, the choorile roams at night, crying mournfully.

[edit] Massacooramaan

The Massacooramaan is a huge, hairy, man-like creature that lives in rivers in the interior. Fearful looking, the massacooramaan capsizes small boats and eats the occupants.

[edit] Moon-Gazer

The Moon-Gazer is a Jumbee that appears to be a tall muscular man. It stands with its legs on either side of the road, hands on hips, staring at the moon. If one alerts it to your presence it will eat you.

Also known as "Fire Rass", she is the Guyanese equivalent of a vampire. Ole-Higue is always female. She sucks the blood of sleeping people at night. She turns into a ball of fire and flies in the night sky. Before she sucks a victims blood, she must remove her skin. She has to pick up every grain of rice on the ground before entering.
