- 1877 – The New York and Manhattan Beach Railway (a predecessor of the Long Island Rail Road) opens.
- 1885 – The Zanesville and Ohio River Railway enters receivership.
- 1900 – The first section of the Paris Métro opens.

- 1967 – The New York City Subway introduces its first air conditioned passenger car.
- 1968 – Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway's Texas Chief passenger train discontinues station stops at Dallas, Texas.
- 1987 – New short line railroad Red River Valley and Western Railroad begins operations over 667 miles (1,073.4 km) of former BN tracks in North Dakota.
