Julius Kautz

Julius (Gyula) Kautz (1829-1909) was a Hungarian economist and statesman, born at Raab, and educated at Raab, at Pest, and at Leipzig. He was made instructor (1859) and then professor (1863), of political economy in the University of Pest. In 1883 he became vice-governor, and in 1892-1900 was governor, of the Austro-Hungarian Bank. He was made a Privy Councilor, served as member of the Hungarian parliament (1865-83), and after 1886 was a life member of the Upper Chamber. In 1860 he was chosen a member of the Hungarian Academy of Science. His more important works in Hungarian are a system of economics and finance (last edition, 1890), and, in German, Theorie und Geschichte der Nationalökonomik (two volumes, 1858-60)
