Jukskei River

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jukskei River is one of the largest rivers in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is mostly shallow and not deep enough for transportation. It is also often very polluted [1], and occasionally has outbreaks of cholera[2].

The banks are prone to bursting[3], especially in summer when rainfalls are the heaviest for the year regionally. This spells disaster for the impoverished residents of the Alexandra Township who are often forced to build make-shift shacks along it's banks due to over-crowding and the need for access to water for washing, drinking and cooking.
