Juba Arabic language

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Juba Arabic is a lingua franca spoken mainly in Equatoria Province in Southern Sudan, and derives its name from the large southern Sudanese town of Juba. It is also spoken in communities of people from south Sudan living in towns in Northern Sudan.

In spite of its common name, Juba Arabic is not a dialect of Arabic, but rather a pidgin that differs from Sudanese Arabic (from which it is based) because of its vastly simplified grammar as well as the influence of local languages from the south - including Dinka, Nuer and Shilluk.

The pidgin developed in the 19th century, among descendants of Sudanese soldiers.
