Juan Miguel Salvador
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Juan Miguel Salvador’s introduction to music began at the very young age of 8. He was born on September 29, 1963 as the 2nd to the youngest out of 7 children of Juan Jose Salvador and Norah Irene Chico. He together with his brothers and sisters were given piano lessons. As he approached his teens, he had reached the level of playing the more difficult classical pieces but soon discovered his keen sense of Oido. This led to his passion for the music of Barry Manilow whom he would mimic a lot. Soon after he would be singing and playing the piano during family gatherings.
His first taste of performing semi- professionally was in 1980, when he became a member of “The Kundirana, La Salle Green Hills Ambassadors of Goodwill”. His claim to fame then was Manilow’s “One Voice”, a fitting tribute to his lifetime idol to be. As Advertising Arts student at University of Sto. Tomas his love for music would not be denied as he found himself teaching harmony to prominent schools that would compete in contests such as the San Beda Chorale Collection. His stint as a Chorale mentor was outstanding as all the groups he had taught ended up garnering the grand Prize. Juan Miguel also had a knack for song writing, His composition “Magkaisa… Ikaw, Ako, Lahat”, interpreted by Eugene Villaluz was one of the finalists at the 1982 Metro Pop Festival. The said song has been re-arranged, revised and re- sung by none other than Gary Valenciano and is now used for last year’s campaign by the Department of Education. He has since written songs for recording artists such as Janet Arnaiz, Pat Castillo, Jaqui Magno & Gino Padilla to name a few. Unknown to many, Juan Miguel had composed, arranged and performed a song for his Alma Mater which pokes fun at a rival school. The song is called I’d Rather Be Green Than Be Blue and is fast gaining tremendous popularity on the Internet.
For the last 25 years Juan Miguel has been dishing out commercial jingles and theme songs for practically all the major Ad Agencies and Corporations in the country and has won numerous awards for best TV & Radio Jingle. He recently won the highest award in the “Best Radio Jingle” category during the recently concluded Araw Awards 2005 held in Cebu City. His professional experience in Live Performing goes back to the year1983 when he became the founding member of a band called Rage, which gained tremendous popularity in the 80’s. Playing mostly Top 40 tunes, Rage soon became synonymous to the decade that had also become the biggest influence to Juan Miguel as a musician. Ironically, this ‘hesitant’ Rocker won a Cecile Award for Best Jazz composition, for his song “Why”, interpreted by Jaqui Magno back in 1984. With Rage though, Juan Miguel had fallen in love with Pop Rock Music. He has had his fair share of adoring fans that would end up following the group wherever they performed. Among some of the highlights of his stint with Rage were… Concerts in the major stadiums both here and in Asian countries like Singapore, Malaysia & Korea; Television appearances in practically all major variety shows during the 80’s. At one point a major Beverage Corporation signed them up as one of their endorsers. Rage reached its peak in 1988 as it embarked on its bid for international recognition. To say the latest, the dream did not materialized as the key members of the group lacked the much needed financial resources needed to maintain its initial footing in the United States. This, Unfortunately, had marked the end of Rage as the members who had remained in the country sought out to play with other bands. Juan Miguel moved on as a solo artist, then as a member of a band he called The Warring Angels”. They had done the usual round of gigs and special shows during the early 90’s. His career as a performer took brief respite in the mid- 90’s as he opted to concentrate on doing Commercial Jingles full- time.
His passion for getting back to live performing would not be denied as he decided to revive Rage in 2001. This was due to the fact that 80’s music was back in the airwaves. Once again, Rage was in business. They had played in major bars such as Dish, Strumm’s, Street life, Ratsky’s, Chef & Brewer, and Hard Rock Café and were later signed up by a major beverage company to do a tour of 60 shows in 60 bars all over the country between 2003 to 2004. Juan Miguel thought its best to call it quits, as he had felt unhappy being with the group towards the last 2 years, for personal reasons.
In no time he has once again dipped his hands in the band scene with a group he feels may be his last. Being considered a senior & master in this fields], he intends to pour all his creative juices on his newfound band he calls THE AUTHORITY. In contrast to the music of his former group, The Authority is not limited to 80’s music. Their repertoire consists of an eclectic mix of Rock, Soul, Alternative, Dance and Pop music. Juan Miguel intends to sing songs by artists that have influenced his style throughout his long musical career; Artists like Billy Joel, Elton John, Barry Manilow, Queen, Meatloaf, etc. Don’t be surprised if you see and hear him do a number by Michael Buble or even Robbie Williams. His Band does a mean Queen Medley which always brings the house down. THE AUTHORITY is ready to take the industry by storm with its line up of seasoned musicians and singers who are masters of their respective instruments and voices. They aim to capture the attention of music enthusiasts who may be tired of the oversaturated form of rock music now prevalent on mainstream media. This tough stand has caught the eye of numerous Expats who have since been flocking to see the bands Live performances. Their unique difference to the usual band scene keeps them coming for more week after week.
The Authority recently won The Global Battle of the Bands and earned the distinct honour of representing their country (Philippines) at the world finals in London last December 2005. Thanks to an old friend and colleague by the name of Ompong Remigio who penned the lyrics to “Who Turned The Lights Out” & “I Can’t Quit You”, the two songs specially written and performed during the competition. The amazing feat of being singled out among more than Two Hundred and Fifty other bands all over the country had caught the attention of Mr. Philip Yupangco, owner and President of the largest and most respected Music Trading company in the country today. Yupangco has recently signed up Juan Miguel and The Authority for an initial period of One year. They are now official endorsers of Sennheiser, Korg, Roland, Yamaha, Fender, Washburn, Pearl, Boss, Marshall, Sabian & Vic Firth. The Authority is composed of Juan Miguel on Lead Vocals and Main Keyboard (KORG), Alvin Soriano on Bass (Washburn), Jay Agustin on 2nd Keyboard (Yamaha), Bong Dela Cruz on Guitar (Fender), Austin Farinas on Drums (Pearl Kit/ Sabian Cymbals/ Vic Firth sticks) and Jun Alicante, also on a Fender Guitar. The band uses Roland Boss for their guitar effects, Marshall and Roland as Bass and Keyboard Amps, respectively, and relies on Sennheiser to give them their great vocal sound. The Authority is being managed by Ms. Sheril Sugui.
