Joyce Hatto
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Joyce Hatto (born September 5, 1928, died June 30, 2006) was a British pianist. She studied with Serge Krish and also received guidance from Alfred Cortot, Benno Moiseiwitsch, Clara Haskil and others. She studied composition with Paul Hindemith, Nadia Boulanger and Matyas Seiber.
Hatto stopped playing in public in 1976 due to an ongoing fight with cancer. However, she continued to make recordings, totalling over 100 on the English label Concert Artists (see[1]).
Her recordings include complete cycles of Beethoven, Mozart and Prokofiev sonatas, the concertos of Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Brahms and Mendelssohn and the complete works of Chopin. She was also one of the few pianists to have recorded the complete Godowsky Chopin Studies. She was a major proponent of Liszt throughout her early career.
She was once described as 'the greatest living pianist that almost no one has ever heard of'.
