Joy Hakim

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joy Hakim is a history writer who was raised in Rutland, Vermont. She earned a Bachelor's Degree from Smith College and a Master's Degree and honorary doctorate from Goucher College. For many years she worked as an editor of the Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Virginia. Her first published work was the well-received, ten-volume, A History of US, from Oxford University Press. It is a "narrative history" intended for young readers (of all ages). She is also the author of The Story of Science, which tells the story of the quest to understand the universe, from Aristotle to Einstein, and on to today's physicists. One of her books, Freedom: A History of US, was turned into a 16-part PBS series, and is available both in book format and on video. Her books have earned her the James Michener Award for Writing by the National Council for Social Studies, two Parents' Choice awards, and good reviews from children. However, she has faced some criticism for being "too multicultural" and trying to make history "fun" for kids.
