Jove Malaj Mome

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jove Malaj Mome (Bulgarian: Йове Мале Моме) is a fast Bulgarian folk dance. It is in 18/8 meter with alternating bars of 7+11 (7/8 +11/8). Some dancers count it as 1& 23 123& 45 or SQQ-QQSQQ, "S" meaning "slow", and "Q" meaning "quick". It originates from the traditional dance Jove from the Sopluk region of Bulgaria.

Jove Malaj Mome is an advanced line dance performed while holding belts. Dancers may also hold hands if belts are not available. Musical renditions of the song often feature the traditional Bulgarian gaida.

The dance is popular among international folk dancers around the world. Its choreography was first introduced outside of Bulgaria by Dennis Boxell in Stockton, California, 1965.
