Pinkard's distinguished prep career included being named a Super Prep All-American, Super Prep All-Farwest, Prep Star All-West, Tacoma News Tribune Western 100, All-CIF Southern Section first team, All-CIF Division IV and Los Angeles Times All-Ventura/North Coast pick as a senior defensive back and wide receiver. Pinkard is arguably the Trojan's most versatile and important defender. Able to play multiple defensive positions, he has started both at cornerback and free safety for the Trojans. His sophomore year he finished third in tackles with 54. He also added 2 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles.

In the first game of his sophomore season (2005), also against Arkansas, he forced a fumble, recovered it and returned it for a touchdown during the Trojan's 70-17 route.

During USC's 2006 season opener (a 50-14 win over Arkansas), Pinkard suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and is likely out for the remainder of the season.
