Joseph Wendel

His Eminence Joseph Cardinal Wendel (May 27, 1901 – December 31, 1960) was a German Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church and Archbishop of Munich from 1952 until 1960.
He was born in Blieskastel.
Before he became Archbishop, he was Bishop of Speyer (1943–1952). He was made a Cardinal by Pope Pius XII in 1953. In 1956 he became the first bishop of the Bundeswehr and in 1960 he organised the International Eucharistic Congress in Munich.
Wendel died in Munich in 1960 shortly after his New Year's Eve sermon.
