Joseph Dixon (steelmaker)

Joseph Dixon (1799-1869) was an American inventor. He made important improvements in photography, lithography, bank-note printing, steel smelting, and lens grinding. He was by turns a shoemaker, printer, lithographer, wood engraver, and physician, and gained wealth from his crucible works, established at Salem, Mass., in 1827 and moved to Jersey City in 1847.
