Josep Lluís Sert

Josep Lluís Sert i López (1902—1983) was a Spanish architect from Catalonia.
He was born in Barcelona. As a child he showed already interest in the works of Gaudí and of his uncle, the painter Josep Maria Sert. He studied at the Barcelona School of Architecture.
In 1952 Sert held a one-year visiting professorship at Yale University. The following year he became the dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he stayed until 1969.
While at Harvard, Sert established in 1955 an architectural agency together with some associates. They worked on projects all over the country, including office, public, retail and residential buildings. In the neighbourhood of Harvard University Sert designed several of his most famous buildings, including the Harvard Science Center, Peabody Terrace, and Holyoke Center. [1] Even in that northern locale, some have seen a mediterranean quality in his work. Sert designed several other building in Cambridge, MA including two undergraduate residences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New House and Next House. The central architectural theme around which both of these residences were designed are sunlight and community.
