Joseon

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joseon (조선, 朝鮮, also Chosŏn) is a name for Korea, as used in the following cases:

  • The first Korean kingdom, Gojoseon, existed from 2333 BC to 108 BC.
  • Korea was known as "Joseon" during the Joseon Dynasty from 1392 AD to 1910 AD.
  • Korea under Japanese rule was named Chōsen in Japanese, a term which derives from the Korean Joseon.
  • North Korea today refers to Korea as a whole, or sometimes just North Korea, as Chosŏn in the Korean language.

See Names of Korea for more details on the changing use of the name.

It is also used in the names of two prominent newspapers: the South Korean Chosun Ilbo and the pro-North Chosŏn Shinbo of Japan.
