Jos. Louis

Jos. Louis are a plastic wrapped dessert consisting of two chocolate sponge cake rounds with a cream filling in between, within a milk chocolate shell. They are a chocolate version of the May West dessert. They also come in a half-moon variety. However, the so-called "half-moon" variety is not a Jos. Louis, but a Half Moon, which is a completely separate entity. Many people call it the half "loon" moon, due to the packaging which has the fraction 1/2 beside both lune, and moon, the French and English versions. The Loon Moon is available in either chocolate or vanilla flavours. They are made by Vachon Inc., a division of Saputo Inc.

The exact pronunciation of this dessert is a subject of some controversy. This mysterious chocolatey cake treat has been the cause of many a vigorous argument, and many needless injuries have occurred. Some people believe it should be pronounced "Joe Louie", while others believe the "S" is not silent at the end of "Louis". Also, it is questioned whether "Jos." is pronounced "Joe", "Joe's" or "Joss". Some people even pronounce it "Joey Louis". According to customer service representitives at Vachon, the name was originally Joe Louis, named for the famous American boxer. Fearing legal action from the boxer they changed the name of the product to Jos. Louis, after Joseph and Louis Vachon.

In Canada, especially east of the Rockies, the preferred pronunciation is "Joe Louis", with a silent "S".
