José Gregorio Varela was President of Venezuela in 1878.

Military, and politician. In 1868, he appeared defending Turmero from the attack of the “azules” and enters combat in San Casimiro. In 1877, he exerted the presidency of the old Guzmán Blanco" state (which no longer exists).

In 1878, he rose in arms against the rebellion commanded by general José Ignacio Pulido. That year, he is designated minister of the military and first delegate of the republic. In December 11, 1878, he organized the Constitutional Convention that summoned president Francisco Linares Alcántara to carry out a reform of the Constitution. Is named President by the congress (1878 - 1879), a period that he did not finish as he was overthrown by the Revolución Reivindicadora that exploded in Valencia, Venezuela, onDecember 28, 1878.

In 1879, he fought in La Victoria against the army of the Revolución Reivindicadora. That year an agreement passed Congress and signed by its president Jacinto Lara took place, which asked for the judgment of Valera of the crime of having killed general Rafael María Gualdrón outside the scope of his legal public functions. The trial was carried out, but he was acquitted in 1880.
