[edit] Ottawa-Glandorf Local School District cleanup
I cleaned Ottawa-Glandorf Local School District up to reflect Wikipedia style. The article needs to tell people where the school district is in the first sentence. It should not refer to itself (i.e. links to Ottawa-Glandorf, which just redirects to the same article). It should only include public schools in the district (not preschools such as Titan Tikes Preschool and Loving Daycare and Preschool and not private, catholic schools such as Saint Peter and Paul Elementary). It needs to use verifiable external references and cite these in some way (I should have used Template:cite web but it made the map link not work). Please use this style on other school district articles. Ask here or on my talk page if there are questions. Hope this helps.Ruhrfisch 02:01, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
- My apologies - I finally was able to access the district web site and found the Titan Tikes Preschool is run by the district so I put it back in. Also move the page to Ottawa-Glandorf Local School District as that is the official name (and what other Ohio school districts use). Ruhrfisch 16:58, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
-
- Sorry our wires got crossed - I was unable to access the district webpage when I first did the cleanup. When I could access it and saw the Preschool was official I added it back in and left the above message (which you seem not to have seen). I would still put the preschool below the Elementary schools (so it goes down from HS to ES to PS).
-
- If I may make some suggestions, please link something only the first time it appears in an article or at least section, so Ottawa, Glandorf, Titans, etc. each only needs to be linked once. Please try to avoid repetition - the list of schools already gave the location (village) for each school, so it is not necessary to say that again below in the same section, or the list of District Superintendents does not to have its own separate article and "See Also" from the SD article (when the info is identical in each place). Since most of the world uses the metric system, put distances in km as well as miles (Google will convert units, if you type in "65 miles in km" it gives back "65 miles = 104.60736" - I would use 105 km). Thanks for all you have done on this and in general - keep up the good work! Ruhrfisch 14:37, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Vivian Brown (meteoriligist)
A tag has been placed on Vivian Brown (meteoroligist), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be a biographical account about a person, group of people, or band, but it does not indicate how or why he/she/they is/are notable. If you can indicate why Vivian Brown (meteoroligist) is really notable, I advise you to edit the article promptly, and also put a note on Talk:Vivian Brown (meteoroligist). Any admin should check for such edits before deleting the article. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Please read our criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 7 under Articles. You might also want to read our general biography criteria. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. To contest the tagging and request that admins should wait a while for you to assert his/her/their notability, please affix the template {{hangon}}
to the page, and then immediately add such an assertion. It is also a very good idea to add citations from reliable sources to ensure that your article will be verifiable.
[edit] List of School DIstricts by Ohio County
I thought you might be interested in this PDF list [1] as it gives all the school districts in each Ohio County. Some are mostly in adjoining counties (for example McComb LSD is mostly in Hancock County, but is in a little part of Putnam County as well). Cheers, Ruhrfisch 14:27, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply. If you are talking about a school district and the areas (cities, villages, townships) it serves, then I would be complete and list all of them, even if they are from more than one county. If you are talking about a county and all the school districts in it, then I would list all of them in that county, but I would also note the ones that are mostly in another county. Example: From looking at the census maps, McComb Local School District is almost all in Hancock County, with a little sliver in Putnam County. If I were making a list of school districts by county I would include McComb in both county lists (Hancock and Putnam, but for Putname I would add a parenthesis after with "(mostly in Hancock County)" or something similar). If I were making an article about the McComb Local School District, I would list all the villages and townships (or parts of them) in both counties it served. If I misunderstood your question, please ask again. Take care, Ruhrfisch 20:38, 14 August 2006 (UTC) PS Did you see the new map for the Fort Wayne Metropolitan Area?
[edit] License tagging for Image:Allen County Fair.gif
Thanks for uploading Image:Allen County Fair.gif. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:

[edit] The US Census Maps
Hey, to be honest, I just typed into Google something like "Ohio Counties map" and the US Census page showed up, along with a few other sites that can be browsed through. You have to search around though, that way you're technically not "using a search engine" to find images. I can't really recall the exact name of the site, but it's out there. Thanks for noticing the map though, I was proud of that! :) Frank12 00:48, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Website
Here, this might be useful: http://www.censusfinder.com/mapoh.htm . It'll take you to the Ohio map, but it has a scroll down for access to other state maps as well. Frank12 13:05, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, I still had your page on my watchlist from our early exchanges and saw the header - the Census map website is http://factfinder.census.gov. Pick maps (second from bottom on left menu) and then reference maps, then 2000 Census tracts. You can turn various boundaries and labels on and off and can pick what you want to show. If you right click you can copy the map and paste it into Paint or the Gimp or another program to manipulate. If you are thinking of making county school district maps, you might want to look at the ones I made for Pennsylvania for ideas - here's an example Image:Map of Tioga County Pennsylvania School Districts.png. I would avoid maps from commercial sites as they are possibly not Public Domain - census maps are. Hope this helps, Ruhrfisch 13:47, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Maps
The link where I got the northern part (northern two counties) of the Fort Wayne, Indiana Metropolitan Area map is here [2]. The map for the southern part (southern county) is here [3]. You can move the map (hand), zoom in and out (plus and minus signs), and change what is shown on the map with the "Change" box in the upper left corner - change Boundaries and Features to put rivers in or take labels off, or put school districts in, etc. If you right click you can copy the map and paste it into Micorosft Paint or the GIMP or other image manipulation software. I edited out the northern two counties and pasted them with the southern county, plus added some highway labels.
Census maps or the National Atlas or any US Governemnt maps are free use (public domain). Almost any other web page is not free use. Some things can be used as fair use but maps are generally not.
As for licenses, if you make it yourself you can license it under GFDL or others. I always note that the map source is public domain (US Government - I use http://factfinder.census.gov) and my modifications are GFDL. Click on a map to see the page for it and the license is there. Ask away if you have other questions. Ruhrfisch 02:04, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
