Jorge Chávez International Airport (IATA: LIM, ICAO: SPIM) is Peru's main international and domestic airport, serving over 5 million passengers per year (5,4 million passengers in 2005). It is located in Callao, 10 km (6 miles) from Downtown Lima. Callao is the port city now fully integrated with Lima, the nation's capital.
It was the hub for Aeroperú and Faucett (one of the oldest airlines in Latin America) for many years, and now it serves as a hub for many new aviation companies.
The airport is named after the pioneer Peruvian pilot Jorge Chávez Dartnell and was inaugurated in 1960. It was privatized in 2001 and is now managed by Lima Airport Partners (LAP), a joint venture of Alterra Partners and Fraport AG Frankfurt Airport Services Worldwide.
On February 2005 the first phase of the renovation project was completed. It includes Peru Plaza Shopping Center and a new concourse with 18 gates, 7 of them with boarding bridges (jetways). The next phase will include the construction of a four-stars hotel and the expansion of the concourse with 12 additional boarding bridges.
Jorge Chávez International Airport was awarded the title of best airport in South America by Skytrax World Airports Awards 2005.
There are ongoing talks of building a new megaport which would include a megaairport, a megaport and a terrestrial port to link the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The airport would have 3-4 runways and be located on the San Lorenzo island. This project is called the San Lorenzo Megaport Project
