Jon Lord

Jon Douglas Lord (born 9 June 1941) is an English Hammond organ and piano player.
Born in Leicester, he was a member of Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Paice, Ashton & Lord, The Artwoods, and Flower Pot Men. He is recognized for combining rock and classical music.
In 1968, Jon co-founded Deep Purple, the band he was most well-known for. Jon and the drummer, Ian Paice, were the only constant band members for 34 years. He left Deep Purple after their UK tour in 2002, and was replaced with Don Airey.
One of his most ambitous works was his composition Concerto for Group and Orchestra which was performed at the Royal Albert Hall in 1969 with Deep Purple right after establishing the legendary Mark 2 lineup with Gillan and Glover. The concerto was later revised in 1999 with another performance at the Albert Hall with DP. Guitarist Steve Morse filled in for Ritchie Blackmore.
Jon had been considering leaving the band for some time, due to his busy touring schedule and his concerto. In 2001, Don Airey was used to substitute him for a month after a knee injury. This worked out, so Jon decided to leave in 2002.
Jon is well-respected for his mastery of the Hammond Organ. Some call him "Lord of the Hammond", and in his 34-year Deep Purple career, you can hear his distinctive solos amid many classic songs on their albums.
