Clifford played for various teams around Ireland, including Derry City F.C. and had a brief spell at Nottingham Forest F.C. as a youth. Clifford was troubled by injury throughout his career and his difficulty with weight ensured that he never made it as a full professional. He returned to Derry to found Tristar Boys F.C., which, to this day, is one of the most successful youth teams in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Clifford is known as "Ug" around Derry, due to his unique beard and overall intimidating appearance. He is known as one of the top coaches in Derry, and it is both his successes with Tristar and association with Derry City F.C. that attracts young players to the club.
