John Jex was born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, United Kingdom on 8th August 1969. He attended St. Andrew's Primary School, The Gosforth School and Henry Fanshawe School, all in Dronfield, Derbyshire.

He completed a degree in Applied Chemistry at Coventry University in 1991.

He worked as a freelance radio presenter, beginning on student station W963, and later moving to Radio Harmony in Coventry.

He pursued a full time career in the chemical industry, working for National Starch & Chemical, TR Oil Services and Clariant.

During his career he has lived and worked in Oman, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, China, Indonesia and the United Kingdom. He is married with 2 children and now lives in Aberdeen, Scotland.
