Johnson & Wales University (JWU, J&W) is a private, coeducational, career oriented university. Providence, Rhode Island, is home of JWU's main and largest of four currently operating campuses in the United States. Founded as a business school in 1914 by Gertrude I. Johnson and Mary T. Wales, JWU currently has in excess of 16,000 students enrolled in business, culinary, hospitality, education, and technology programs.

One distinguishing characteristic about the school is how the school year is divided into three trimesters (each 11 weeks long), where the standard fall and spring semesters are replaced with fall, winter and spring trimesters. One advantage to this is that students can accomplish more coursework in the same span of time compared to other universities, but the vacation times are significantly shorter than they commonly are (winter vacations are usually four weeks long in semesters, while trimesters only have two to three weeks of the same vacation). JWU however has a 4 day week, and students normally have Friday off.

The mission of Johnson & Wales University is to empower its diverse student body to succeed in today's dynamic world by integrating general education, professional skills, and career-focused education. To this end, the University employs its faculty, services, curricula, and facilities to equip students with the conceptual and practical tools needed to become contributing members of society and to achieve success in employment fields with high growth potential.

The University currently has seven academic units: the College of Business, the College of Culinary Arts, the Hospitality College, the School of Technology, the Alan Shawn Feinstein Graduate School, the Graduate School of Education, and the John Hazen White School of Arts & Sciences. Of these, the School of Arts & Sciences is not degree-granting, but provides necessary academic support to the degree-granting programs in the others Schools and Colleges.
Johnson & Wales University is well-known for their culinary program, with one prominent alumnus of the program being Emeril Lagasse. The University is considered one of the best in the world for its culinary program, along with the Culinary Institute of America. Their hospitality program is also rated very highly as well. The university is the largest foodservice educater in the world.

The University is career-oriented, requiring students to take three courses in career management before graduation (Introduction to Career Management, Career Planning and Career Management Capstone). Annual career fairs, which feature hundreds of leading companies, is hosted by the university exclusively for JWU students and alumni.

In addition to its Rhode Island campus, Johnson & Wales operates campuses in Charlotte, North Carolina; North Miami, Florida and Denver, Colorado. Two previous campuses in Norfolk, Virginia and Charleston, South Carolina have been consolidated as a result of the opening of the Charlotte campus in September 2004.

In addition to the on-campus academic buildings the university also operates three hotels used as practicum education facilities for the schools Hotel Management, Food Service Management, and Culinary Arts degree programs. The facilities include the independent Johnson & Wales Inn & Conference Center located in the Providence suburb of Seekonk, Massachusetts and within fifteen minutes of the university's two Providence campuses, The Johnson & Wales Radisson Airport Hotel, located in Warwick, and the Bay Harbor Inn & Suites, located in Miami Beach. With the opening of the Charlotte campus the university is likely to associate its name and services with a Hilton Doubletree Hotel, built in conjunction with the new campus. The Johnson & Wales Inn also houses the university's flagship restaurant "Audrey's" which takes it's name from Audrey Gaebe, wife of long time University Chancellor Morris Gaebe.

The Wildcat Center is the athletic facility of Johnson & Wales University in Denver. It is home to the athletic of this branch of the culinary university, and was home to the ABA's Colorado Storm in 2004. Wildcat Center is located at the northwest part of the Johnson & Wales campus.

The pilot season of Food Network's Cooking School Stories reality series followed a group of sophomore culinary students at Johnson & Wales University, of the Associate's Degree class of 2001. (The second, somewhat less successful, season did the same with culinary students at The Art Institute of California - Los Angeles.)
