Johnny Peters

John "Johnny" Peters (1850-1924) was a former major league shortstop and second baseman. Peters played in the NA (1874-1875), the NL (1876-1881), and the AA (1882-1884) for the Chicago White Stockings of the NA (1874-75), the Chicago White Stockings of the NL (1876-77, 79), the Milwaukee Grays (1878), the Providence Grays (1880), the Buffalo Bisons (1881), and the Pittsburgh Alleghenys of the AA (1882-1884).

Peters batted over .280 six times, including performances of .351, .317, and .309. Peters struck out and walked very few times. For his career, he struck out only 77 times and walked just 24 times in 2,695 at-bats. Most of Peters' career highs were set in 1876. That year, he played all 66 games, accumulated 111 hits in 316 at-bats, smashed 14 doubles, 2 triples, and 1 home run, batted .351 with 132 total bases, and drove in 47. He only struck out 2 times. His team won the National League pennant that year. He turned in solid performances of .317 and .309 the next 2 years, with 160 hits. After this, however, Peters struggled mightily. His batting average slipped to .245, and would go down the next two years. In 1882, he had a comeback year, batting .288, and accumulating 108 total bases. However, this would be his final full season. He retired in 1884, after just 32 at-bats the previous two seasons.

Peters career totals were some of the finest during his day. Over his career, he had 748 hits, 92 doubles, 12 triples, and 3 home runs, scoring 372 times. He also had a solid .278 batting average. In 1882, he had the 6th most hits all-time.
