Johnny Ola
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Johnny Ola is a fictional character appearing in Francis Ford Coppola's and Mario Puzo's film The Godfather Part II. Ola was portrayed by actor Dominic Chianese.
Johnny Ola was a Sicilian mobster and right hand man to Jewish mobster Hyman Roth. He was part of the plan to assassinate Michael Corleone along with Roth and Michael's brother Fredo Corleone. When Michael asked if Fredo and Johnny had ever met, they denied knowing each other. Though during a New Years party Michael overheard Fredo say Ola had brought him here once even (contradictory to Fredo telling Michael they hadn't met). Michael's bodyguard was sent to kill Ola and Roth once this was heard because now he knew who was responsible for the attempted assassination. As Johnny Ola was on his balcony, he was strangled with a wooden coat hanger wielded by Michael's bodyguard.
Some say Johnny Ola was based on real life mobster Vincent Alo who was Meyer Lansky's right hand man.
[edit] Trivia
The character of Jonny Ola continued even after Godfather Part 2. When approached by "Hyman Roth Radio Station" hosts MJJH and DWK, Dominic Chianese was asked if he would like to have his own talk show. Dominic was very pleased and said "Well thats stupendous!" the show was titled "Jonny Ola's talk show" where everyday people would phone 0900 OLA and discuss current affairs, the death of Richard Bright, the Middle East and many other topics. Dominic was famed for his catchphrase "Jonny Ola here, ola?"
