John Van Buren

John Van Buren (May 13, 1799 - January 16, 1855) was a United States Representative from New York. He is often mistaken for the son of President Martin Van Buren also named John Van Buren 1810 - 1866.
Born in Kingston, he graduated from Union College in 1818, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Kingston. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1831, was judge of Ulster County from 1836 to 1841, and was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1841-March 3, 1843). While in the House he was chairman of the Committee on Expenditures in the Department of State (Twenty-seventh Congress).
After his term in the House he resumed the practice of law and was district attorney of Ulster County from 1846 to 1850; in 1855 he died in Kingston, and interment was in Old Houghtaling Cemetery.
