John Trimble (18311902) was one of the seven founders of the Grange. He was a student of the Protestant Episcopal Church, receiving his Doctor of Divinity. Following the American Civil War, he served in the Treasurer Department as agent for the collection of war claims for several of the states. Considered the "wet blanket" of the original founders, Trimble stood fast by his beliefs, and his counsel was highly valued. It was through his guidance that much of the instruction of the Grange stems from the works of the Bible.

The other founders of the Grange were: Oliver Hudson Kelley, William Saunders, Francis M. McDowell, Aaron B. Grosh, John R. Thompson, William M. Ireland and Caroline A. Hall.
