John Carl Thomson (born October 1, 1973 in Vicksburg, Mississippi) is a Major League Baseball player. Thomson, a right-handed pitcher, was signed as a free agent by the Atlanta Braves in December 2003.
Thomson was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 7th round of the June 1993 free agent draft. He made his debut for the Rockies on May 11, 1997. In his rookie year, he went 7-9 with a 4.71 ERA and 106 strikeouts.
On July 31, 2002, John was traded to the New York Mets.
After signing with the Braves on December 9, 2003, Thomson had the best season of his career in 2004. He recorded a career high in wins, going 14-8, while posting a solid 3.84 ERA. He appeared to be carrying his success from '04 into 2005, but after a fast start, he missed a large portion of the season due to an injury on the middle finger of his pitching hand. He returned to the rotation in mid-August, but was not as reliable as he had been before the injury.
Despite Thomson's injury troubles in 2005, the Braves exercised a team-option for 2006 that allowed him to remain on the team for at least another year.
