John Sykes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Sykes (born July 29, 1959 in Reading, Berkshire), is a British heavy metal/hard rock guitarist who has played with Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, Tygers Of Pan Tang, Blue Murder and his solo project John Sykes. He was also in a band called Badlands, with his one time Whitesnake bandmate Neil Murray, but this was not the same Badlands that guitarist Jake E. Lee was in.

His most acclaimed playing is on the 1987 Whitesnake self titled album, also known simply as 1987. This was Whitesnake's most successful recording, and songs like "Crying in the Rain", "Still of the Night", "Is This Love?", "Here I Go Again" and "Children of the Night" were hits.

For the Whitesnake record John Sykes used two Mesa Boogie Colliseum heads and his favourite Gibson Les Paul Custom guitar.

In 1999, John Sykes' solo song "Cautionary Warning" was used in the anime series Black Heaven. The footage accompanying the song was rotoscoped from one of Sykes' concerts, which was a very striking statement for use in previews. Sykes' involvement in the series was the key feature of Pioneer USA's marketing.

In 2004, John made a rare guest appearance on keyboardist Derek Sherinian's solo record "Mythology" on the song "God Of War" where he plays alongside Zakk Wylde.

In 2006, he got his own signature Gibson Les Paul Custom which was modeled after his favourite guitar, and has used it when touring with Thin Lizzy all around the UK and Ireland.
