John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School is a public seven-year magnet school for the fine and performing arts in Augusta, Georgia, which draws students from grades six through twelve from all parts of the Richmond County Board of Education School district. In addition to a basic curriculum of college preparatory and Advanced Placement academic courses, Davidson offers academic and fine arts courses in music, dance, arts, photography, chorus, and other arts. The school has consistently been named as one of the best in the state of Georgia, and was named the number one academic school in the state each year from 1996 to 2003. The school is also known for its excellent music program; the Davidson Concert Chorale has been consistently named among the best high school choirs in the nation.
Originally established as a elementary school 1934 and located on Telfair Street in downtown Augusta, Davidson was reorganized as a middle and high school for student arts in 1981. In 1998, Davidson moved from its original structure to a new campus a block away between 12th Street and 13th Street, Walton Way and Telfair Street.
Admission to Davidson is based upon school grades and interest in the fine arts. Approximately enough students attend Davidson, but some students can be placed on a waiting list for each grade level. Davidson also has a racially balanced student body (45% African American, 45% white, and 10% Hispanic, Asian, Middle Eastern, or other). The graduating Class of 2007 consists of 88 students.
