John Preator (born on August 8, 1980) is a semi-finalist of the third season of American Idol.
He is from Provo, Utah and graduated in 1998 from Timpview High School and served an LDS church mission to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1999. John spent two years performing as a member of the BYU Young Ambassadors and appears on their recording The Lord is My Light. He was also acted in a number of musicals in the Utah Valley and Wyoming. He also received a national college performing award for his role as Professor Harold Hill in BYU's 2005 production of Meredith Willson's The Music Man.
In March 2004, he performed as a Top 32 finalist on American Idol, singing "That's What Love Is All About". In response to his performance, judge Randy Jackson said, "Oh dude, I'm glad that's over, that was painful. Not one note was in tune, well, maybe the last note. It's not happening for me." Paula Abdul also remarked on his pitch problems, and Simon Cowell said, "If we do American Idol as ice dancing, you are it. Singing and skating, that's you." In response, John said to Ryan Seacrest, "I was going for the torn gown comment, but got the ice dancing comment, so that's okay".
However, later that year, John was featured in the Stadium of Fire with Reba McEntire. He continued to perform in musicals, appearing in productions of Beauty and the Beast and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and released an independent CD, I'll Be Seeing You, in 2005.
