John O'Leary (Kerry)

John O'Leary (born 1933) was a Irish Fianna Fáil party politician and who served for more than thirty years as TD for Kerry South.

From Killarney, O'Leary was first elected to the 18th Dail in the December 1966 by-election to succeed Honor Mary Crowley, and re-elected for nine successive terms, in the 1969, 1973, 1977, 1981, 1982, 1982, 1987, 1989, and 1992 elections.

In January 1978, he was appointed a Minster of State at the Department of the Environment by Taoiseach Jack Lynch.

He retired at the 1997 general election and Fianna Fáil selected his son Brian to contest the seat. However, it was won by Jackie Healy-Rae who ran as an independent candidate when he was not selected by Fianna Fáil.
