John Merivale

John Herman Merivale, often known as Jack Merivale, (December 1, 1917February 6, 1990) was an actor.

Born in Toronto, Canada, he was the son of Philip Merivale, and the stepson of Gladys Cooper.

Merivale made his acting debut playing the small role of a newsboy in James Whale's The Invisible Man (1933), and spent the 1940s and early 1950s acting in British theatre. In 1956 he made his second film appearance, in The Battle of the River Plate and although he appeared in such films as King Rat (1965),The List of Adrian Messenger, Arabesque, and Caltiki - il mostro immortale he concentrated on theatre work.

He was married to the actress Jan Sterling from 1941 until 1948, and he lived with Vivien Leigh from 1958 until her death in 1967. He was married to Dinah Sheridan from 1986, until his death from renal failure, in London.
