John McAteer was National Organiser of the Scottish National Party (SNP) from 1968 - 1977. He organised the campaign for the successful election to the United Kingdom House of Commons of Winifred Ewing in 1967.

He was involved in the SNP at a time when they saw significant growth. At the end of his career the SNP had 11 Westminster Parliamentary MPs, the highest they have achieved.
