John Marsh (designer)

John Marsh was born on 5 February 1946 in Northumberland, England and studied at Ravensbourne College first in furniture design and later in typography and Communication design.

His work as a designer sets him apart from many others, He is known within the design community for his excellent eye for typopgraphic detail and his sense of wit in design.

He spent his early career as an art director in London at advertising agencies Connell, May and Stevenson and Burson Marsteller. He later went on to found his own agency, John Marsh Design, in 1974. Clients included Rosenthal , Villeroy & Boch chinaware, Kosta Boda glassware, Barclays Bank, The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightment and the Royal Opera House, quickly establishing himself as the major player in communication design for the arts industry.

His work includes designs for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, EMI and British Telecom.

His influence on graphic and communication design in the 1970s to 1980s is still felt today as designers and students look at his typographic forms and identity programs in their college work.

He currently works as a partner for the design consultancy Design for Diversity.

During his prolific career, he has received many design awards including five of the prestigious D&AD awards.
