John Leonard Dawson

John Leonard Dawson MS, FRCS, CVO (1932-1999) was the Serjeant Surgeon to the Royal Household of the United Kingdom.

Born in Leicester, in 1932. He graduated from King's College in 1955 and after training at St James’s Hospital, Balham, and at Harvard he was appointed as a consultant surgeon at King's College Hospital where he studied the causes of postoperative kidney failure and liver disease. He pioneered surgery techniques, including radical tumour resection, injection sclerotherapy, and portosystemic shunt surgery.

John was clinical dean of the faculty of medicine and dentistry at King's College from 1988 to 1992 and was president of the surgical section of the Royal Society of Medicine. His skills and knowledge lead to his appointment as serjeant surgeon to the Royal Household. He retired in 1991, and died on May 16th, 1999.
