John Joseph McGowan, better known only as John Joseph or as Bloodclot was the lead singer for the New York hardcore band Cro-Mags ont most of their releases and also sang for the bands Fearless Vampire Killers and Bloodclot!.
The son of a boxer, John was born in the beginning of the '60's but was soon put in foster homes and he just ran away and lived on the streets starting at about 13 years old. He joined the Marines at 18 years old but soon went AWOL after seeing a Bad Brains show in Washington, D.C. to become a roadie for the band. He also did back-up vocals for the band Antidote on their Thou shalt not kill record.
Soon after that, he became Hare Krishna conscious and moved back to New York where he joined the Cro-Mags to become their singer and main lyricist. He sang on six of the eight Cro-Mags records, Best Wishes and Revenge being the only ones on which he was not. He indeed composed all the lyrics to Best Wishes before quitting the band to come back on Alpha-Omega.
He is credited as the one who introduced Krishna Consciousness to to the hardcore scene, opening the path to bands like 108 (band), Shelter (band) and many others.
He just wrote a book, The Evolution of a Cro-Magnon, about his life and experience with the Cro-Mags and plans to turn it into a movie someday.
