John James Sainsbury (1844-1928) founded the Sainsbury's supermarket chain, now the largest part of J Sainsbury plc
From one store in Holborn, London, opened at 173 Drury Lane in 1869, he built a chain of supermarkets which numbered 128 when he died. When he died in 1928, his last words were "Keep the shops well lit."
Today the group owns over 750 stores but no family member has been involved in management since the 1990s. They do, however, continue to control at least 19.89% of the shares.
