John Horgan (born 1952) is a former Irish sportsman who played hurling with Cork in the 1970s.
John Horgan is regarded as one of the greatest corner-backs ever to have played hurling with Cork. He was renowned as a long-striking, flamboyant player who scored many a long-distance point for Cork, often in times of greatest need. Throughout his career he won virtually every honour in the game and on the field of play was the most recognisable hurler of his time, sporting long blonde hair which allied to his swashbuckling style thrilled the hurling followers of his generation. His first success with Cork came in 1967 when he won an All-Ireland Minor title with the Leesiders. Three years later he had made the breakthrough onto the senior team, winning his first National Hurling League medal, his first Munster Championship and his first All-Ireland titles. This was later followed by claiming an All-Ireland Under-21 to finish off a spectacular year. Horgan won further Munster and League titles in 1972 and 1974, however, it wasn't until 1975 that the great Cork team of the 1970s began its amazing run of success. With Horgan at corner-back Cork claimed five Munster victories in-a-row between 1975 and 1979. Furthermore, the team won three All-Ireland titles in-a-row from 1976 until 1978. For his efforts Horgan was named Texaco Hurler of the Year in the final year of the three-in-row. Horgan also won three All-Ireland club titles and five Munster club titles with Blackrock in the 1970s.
